Why Sparkling Wine is Having a Moment
“New Zealand is very fortunate to have more than a handful of top sparkling winemakers,” says one of Aotearoa’s most trusted wine commentators and special guest at Winetopia 2025, Joelle Thomson.
She explains that some New Zealand sparkling wines made using the traditional (Champagne) method are now remarkably close in style to those from France. “There’s a growing similarity as the climate warms up in the Champagne region, bringing their wines more into alignment with ours - and as our winemaking experience grows, we become more adept as a wine producing country at making stellar sparkling wines.”
