Take a deep dive into the best of New Zealand wine with our certified gurus. This bunch have made wine their life's work and we are excited to present such a high calibre of gurus this year, two Masters of Wine: Bob Campbell and Stephen Wong plus wine writers: Joelle Thomson and Angie Atkinson.

Bob Campbell

Bob Campbell
Master of Wine

Auckland

New Zealand’s best known and most prolific voice in wine. He was the second New Zealander to be awarded the Master of Wine qualification.

 

Over the course of his career, Bob has conducted numerous wine courses and seminars in the country as well as internationally. Apart from being a wine educator and writer, he has also judged at numerous national and international wine shows.

 

Notably, Bob was the inaugural recipient of the Sir George Fistonich medal in recognition for his contributions to wine and inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Stephen Wong
Master of Wine

Wellington & Christchurch

He’s dubbed himself as New Zealand’s most questionable Master of Wine, however to many people in the Wellington hospitality scene, Stephen Wong is a legend.

 

Having amassed a wealth of knowledge throughout his career as a sommelier, Stephen’s wine journey continued on as he started Wine Sentience, a consulting firm and wine education in Wellington that provides support to hospitality and wine professionals.

 

He was awarded his Master of Wine qualification in 2016 and was the youngest Master of Wine in New Zealand (at that time) and teaches the wine programme at Wellington’s Le Cordon Bleu.

 

Stephen is also the co-founder of a California based online wine service, Stompy. 

Joelle Thomson

Auckland & Wellington

A journalist, author and wine writer and lives in Martinborough, a small but marvellous wine town in the Wairarapa region famed for their luscious Pinot Noir.

 

Martinborough is located approximately 90 minutes from Wellington city. Joelle is a highly regarded writer and has published and authored 16 wine books and hold the Wine & Spirit Education Trust’s highest qualification, the Level 4 Diploma.

 

Since the start of her journalism career, Joelle has written for a myriad of topics for numerous magazine publications as well as for most of the country’s largest newspapers. Joelle is currently the wine writer for Good magazine, NZ Winegrower, Drinksbiz, Capital magazine and her own website. 

Angie Atkinson

Christchurch

Angie is now a well-known wine industry professional with a reputation for a great fashion style, a glamourous selection of heels and a passion for wine and travel.

 

Her love of wine began at a champagne tasting more than 20 years ago. Her career stems from deep within the hospitality industry and working with many outstanding New Zealand and International wine brands.

 

Angie is also currently lady boss of NZ’s newest wine distribution company, Blanc NZ. Angie is a Certified Sommelier and is a graduate of the WSET Level 4 Diploma.

 

Angie has written about wine for several publications including The Beauty Book, Verve Magazine and North & South magazine.
